Teacher Training ProgramThe Arts & Culture Alliance’s arts-in-education program (formerly known as KIA) has been in Knoxville since 1985. Last year, the Alliance was fortunate to host a workshop featuring Dr. Claudia Cornett. Dr. Cornett is a nationally renowned expert on infusing literacy and arts. Dr. Cornett is the author of “Creating Meaning Through Literature and the Arts,” and she is professor emeritus at Wittenberg University. Last year’s in-service took place on July 20 at the Emporium Center.
Teachers, administrators, arts specialists, and individual artists were encouraged to attend. During this workshop, Dr. Cornett will guide participants through a step-by-step process of thoughtful arts integration using her book, “Creating Meaning Through Literature and the Arts,” as the text. Teachers will learn how to do more then “tell” their students; they will learn how to “create meaning” and make lasting impressions for lessons that are both fun and fundamental. Arts and Academics naturally blend to create not only a great learning environment, but GREAT Learning, learning that lasts and has the capacity to grow with the students’ and the future’s needs. Come learn how children can be taught values of freedom and justice using processes consistent with these values, methods that encourage students to think openly, take risks, consider choices and make fair decisions. Teachers and artists who find mutual interests and wish to further their collaborative efforts through an artist residency will be given help applying for funds to do just that. This FREE in-service is provided by the Arts & Culture Alliance through funding by the Tennessee Arts Commission. Come and experience how the arts can make your literature and reading comprehension sing, dance, and shine for all your students!
