Education

Educators agree: arts and culture activities help children do better in school—and in life. Pupils involved in arts programs score an average 83 points higher on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) than other students. And, the 1998 study Involvement in the Arts and Success in Secondary Schools found that those involved in the arts "earned better grades and scores, were less likely to drop out of school, watched fewer hours of television, were less likely to report boredom in school, had a more positive self-concept, and were more involved in community service."

The Arts & Culture Alliance works to bring the educational benefits of cultural activities to the widest range of students and residents possible. Alliance programs bring teachers and artists together in the classroom; sponsor student exhibitions and competitions; and open the doors of museums and performing arts venues to the region’s disadvantaged children.

One of the Alliance’s most popular education programs, the Ticket Subsidy Program, sent more than 22,000 at-risk and underserved students from eleven counties to arts and culture events in 2006-07. The Tennessee Arts Commission administers the Ticket Subsidy Program through the Alliance.  The Arts & Culture Alliance's Teacher Training Program provides teachers and artists with a positive means of interaction, a common language, an understanding of one another's needs, and the means to work together to benefit the students.

In addition to introducing students to new arts and culture opportunities, the Alliance’s education programs also celebrate outstanding student achievement in the arts.  The Scholastic Art Awards celebrate high school student achievement. The work of 26 East Tennessee students went on to New York for national adjudication in 2007.
