Teacher Training Program

ATTENTION CLASSROOM TEACHERS - Local In-service Opportunity!

Since 1985 the Arts & Culture Alliance has conducted arts-in-education programs for area teachers. The Carpetbag Theatre has been training individuals in digital storytelling for several years, and this year the Alliance is fortunate to be hosting a workshop in which Carpetbag will train teachers on arts integration through the creation of digital storytelling. Teachers in Knox County and surrounding counties can now experience the thrill of creating, not just a story, but the visuals and music to make that story come alive for your students. The best part is that the students can also create their own stories with your help after you complete this training on Monday and Tuesday, July 28-29, 2008, from 8:30-3:00 PM at the Emporium Center for the Arts at 100 S. Gay Street (corner of Gay and Jackson) in downtown Knoxville.  FREE breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Teachers grades 5 and up, administrators, arts specialists and music specialists are encouraged to attend along with lower level teachers who are interested in the concept and would like to adapt it for younger children. During this workshop, Carpetbag will guide the participants through the process of creating a digital story, allowing each participant to leave with the knowledge necessary to create his/her own production.

While storytelling is a traditional art-form, digital storytelling transports this ancient form of communication into the computer age. Digital storytelling incorporates visual images (both created and found), music (existing and newly composed), and the unique voice of the individual who uses them all to create meaning.

Besides the obvious educational VALUE to the English teacher, digital storytelling provides a means to deepen students’ understanding of Social Studies, Science, and other curriculum areas. Applied to any of the broad spectrum of topics about which your students need to learn, the process of digital storytelling engages students with the material in a way that makes the content personal and immediate.

Digital storytelling is the antithesis of the perception of electronic media as the thief of literacy. From the personal narrative to the research project, the elements of digital storytelling give each student a voice and do so in a format he/she can actually post for friends and family to admire.

This two day in-service will cost a mere $5 and is provided by the Arts & Culture Alliance through funding by the Tennessee Arts Commission. All you have to do is fill out the attached application form and show up, prepared for fun and learning!

Even your snacks and meals will be provided--- So come and experience how the digital stories can enhance the learning of your already techno-savvy students.

Please fill out the application form and return it to the Arts & Culture Alliance.  Register as soon as possible because space is limited. Tell your friends!
