Statement of Purpose
The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Patrick DeGuira, for exhibition in the main gallery of the beautifully-restored Emporium Center at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location. The Emporium is free and open to the public Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Juror
Patrick DeGuira (born 1972) lives and works in Nashville, TN. He has exhibited his work at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Brooks Museum of Art, Hunter Museum of Art, Cheekwood Museum of Art, as well as numerous commercial, non-profit, University galleries, and is represented by Zeitgeist Gallery. In addition to his exhibition career, he has worked as a Museum Exhibit Designer, Educator, and Curator. In 2010, he curated the exhibition Aftermath, which included the work of Leigh Ledare, Harmony Korine, Kurt Wagner, Brent Stewart, and Chris Scarborough, among others. He has co-curated video exhibitions through Fugitive Projects, inviting such artists as Norberto Rodriguez, Luis Gispert, and Hernan Bas to participate. He has juried exhibitions at UT-Chattanooga and at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. He just finished working on the Carrie Mae Weems exhibition (at the Frist in Nashville) and the exhibition the Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life at the International Center of Photography. His work has been reviewed and featured in numerous publications, including The Oxford American, New American Paintings, Art Papers, Number, and Art Daily. He is the recipient of a Tennessee Independent Artist Fellowship Grant, and multiple Tennessee Professional Development Support Grants: www.patrick-deguira.com

Awards
At least $1,000 in cash awards will be presented at the exhibition’s Opening Reception on February 1 at the Emporium from 5:00-9:00 PM. Awards include a $500 Best in Show, two $250 Juror’s Citations, and a cash award for Best Work by an Alliance member. Awards are as designated by the juror, whose decision is final.

Sales & Commission
Every effort is made to promote sales. All sales are handled by the Arts & Culture Alliance, who retains a 25% commission (20% for cash and check sales). The Alliance assumes that sales tax is included in the price of every piece of artwork. The Artist is responsible for remitting applicable sales tax to the state of Tennessee Sales and Use Tax Department (www.tn.gov/revenue/tntaxes/salesanduse.htm). The receipt of funds from sales, the retention of commissions, and the disbursement of monies to the Artist will be handled by the Alliance. Sold works are to remain in the exhibition until its official closing date and time, unless an alternate arrangement can be reached that is mutually agreeable to the Alliance, the Artist, and the purchaser of the artwork.

Eligibility
Works may not have previously exhibited in any Alliance exhibition at the Emporium Center or in any Alliance satellite gallery (including Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport). Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: 2-D (painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography) and 3-D (sculpture of all media). The maximum allowed size is 120” x 120” in any direction including frame or stand (must fit through a 60” x 120” doorway). Weight is not to exceed 100 lbs. unless special arrangements are made. Works must be suitably framed/mounted and WIRED (to fit over a 5” wide hook) for installation to match the current hanging system (Walker Display).  All 3-D works that do not hang on the wall must be under Plexiglas (exceptions will be made with the permission of the Alliance). The juror reserves the right to disqualify any work not suitably presented or that varies from the submitted image.

Entry Procedure
The nonrefundable entry fee is $40 for up to three works ($25 for Arts & Culture Alliance members and students). Up to three additional entries may be submitted for $7/each ($5 for members/students). Diptychs and triptychs are considered one work. Works are juried by digital image only. Each 2-D work may be represented by one digital image, and each 3-D work may be represented by up to three separate digital images. Send digital images as JPG files, identifying image with entry form number (1-6), artist last name, and title of work (example: 1.JoeSmith.UntitledPainting.jpg).

Application may be mailed, faxed (865-523-7312), or e-mailed to sc@knoxalliance.com.
Images may be sent on CD or via e-mail.
Mailed entries must be postmarked by Saturday, December 8, 2012.
E-mailed entries must be received by Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

We strongly encourage artists to follow up on receipt of entry.

Shipment and Delivery
Shipping artwork to and from the exhibit is the responsibility of the artist. All shipped work must be prepaid. A check for return shipping must be received in an amount based on the stated insurance value of the piece. (Please consider that shipping costs increase over time and the return shipping may be more expensive after the duration of the exhibition than the initial shipping cost). Artist may use his/her own shipping company preference and is responsible for scheduling delivery and pick up of work. Works must be shipped in very sturdy cardboard boxes or crates. Up to $50 will be charged for replacement crates and boxes not safe enough to return works. Please be sure to include detailed packing instructions along with shipped pieces. Works must be labeled with title and artist’s name. Late or damaged work is not accepted.
