Arts & Culture Alliance Presents Knoxville’s Art & Antiques Gallery: A Last Hurrah!

The Arts & Culture Alliance presents Knoxville’s Art & Antiques Gallery: A Last Hurrah!, a new exhibition featuring the works of nearly 20 artists from the Art & Antiques Gallery.  The exhibit runs from April 7 – 22 at the Emporium Center and encompasses two- and three-dimensional media: oil, watercolor, pastels, acrylic, mixed watermedia, watermedia and collage, photography, handmade wood items, and stained glass.

The Art & Antiques Gallery, a unique place to visit and shop, was located at the World’s Fair Park in a quaint, early 1900’s green Victorian House until its recent closing due to the turnover of ownership.  The gallery first opened in 1992, embodying the foresight and ambitions of eight local artists who wished to provide a pleasant place for themselves and other aspiring artists to begin their gallery careers.  Original founders of the cooperative gallery included Julia Schriver (president of Art & Antiques Gallery throughout its existence), Fran Thie, Stephanie Brichetto, Barbara Ogle, Elaine Hasson, Helen Hightower, Betty Crenshaw, and Betsy Worden.  Current board members also include B.J. Clark and Ruth Prince.

The Art & Antiques Gallery was unique locally because of the combination of original visual art, fine crafts, reproductions of art, and quality antiques.  Recent members included Pat Fain, stained glass artist; Gordon Fowler, woodworker; Stacy Kite, oil and acrylic artist; Josephine Mayo, noted local watercolorist; Helen Hightower, oil and watercolor artist; Sandra Curtis, photographer; and many others.  For information on specific artists, please contact the Arts & Culture Alliance.

The opening reception on Friday, April 7, from 5-9pm, is free and open to the public, and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres are served.  Knoxville’s Art & Antiques Gallery: A Last Hurrah!, is on exhibit from April 7 – 22 at the Emporium Center for Arts & Culture, 100 S. Gay Street, downtown Knoxville.  Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9-5pm and Saturday 10-3.  For more information, please contact the Arts & Culture Alliance.
