[posted 01/25/05] Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville to host regional Scholastic Art Awards for 2005 The general public is invited to visit the 2005 Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Exhibition and Awards Ceremony on Sunday, January 23, from 2-4pm and continuing through February 12 at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium gallery is open Mon-Thurs 9-5, Fri 9-8, and Sat 10-3. For more than ten years, the Arts & Culture Alliance has sponsored the regional Scholastic Arts Awards and invested over $30,000 in the program. Over 3,000 local students submitted work for the competition this year. The Alliance presents 75 Gold Key Awards that will go on to the national competition in New York and 75 Silver Key Awards for distinction. "We're very proud of the talent of Greater Knoxville's art students and feel indebted to the wonderful corps of art teachers who foster and direct that talent," says Liza Zenni, Executive Director. "Without our local art teachers, there would be no Scholastic Art and Writing Awards." The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2005The Alliance for Young Artists & WritersThe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have celebrated 80 years as a unique presence in our nation's classrooms by identifying and documenting outstanding achievement of young artists and writers in the visual and literary arts. Since 1923, 12 million students have participated, 2 million young artists and writers have been recognized, and $20 million in awards and scholarships have been made available. Since 1994, the program has been administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing inspiration and validation for the next generation of artists and writers. The Alliance casts the widest net of opportunity to the broadest cross section of teenagers across the country, culminating in the highest level of excellence through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The mission of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is to identify and recognize emerging young artists and writers through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Alliance serves teenagers who create, revise, edit, evolve, and achieve; they serve teachers who mentor, guide, encourage, and inspire. The Alliance is composed of jurors, regional programs, higher education institutions, alumni, national program donors, a board of directors and Alliance staff, and arts education colleagues. Each year, 250,000 students in grades 7 through 12 participate through regional programs and 50,000 students receive regional awards and exhibition opportunities. More than 30,000 entries qualify for national adjudication, and 1,100 young artists and writers across the country receive national awards. The Gold Portfolio Award recipients receive $10,000 scholarships, representing the highest level of achievement in The Awards. All works, on the regional and national level, are evaluated for technical proficiency, originality, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Regional Awards for Students (Preliminary to the National Level of Adjudication and Awards)The following awards are presented to recognize the achievement of excellence on the regional level. These awards are conferred upon both individual works of art and portfolios of art submitted by seniors in high school.
Through the Regional Sponsor network, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are able to provide encouragement and support to tens of thousands of young artists and writers. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is grateful to The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville for demonstrating their commitment to youth and the arts within their communities. National Awards for StudentsThe Gold Key Award works from the regional level are forwarded to New York for the national judging, where professional panelists chosen from the art, literary, and education fields evaluate them. 1,204 works of art and writing were awarded national level honors for 2004. Nine of those recipients were from Knoxville schools! [taken from The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2004 booklet]
