Three Local Artists Place Artwork in Knoxville’s Federal Courthouse
The judges of the federal courthouse in Knoxville wanted to add a few pieces of artwork to their downtown building on Market Street, so they called upon the Arts & Culture Alliance for guidance.  The Alliance circulated an announcement among its nearly 250 individual members who hail from all areas of East Tennessee and create art in a wide variety of mediums.  Knoxville artists Mike Berry, Nelson Velazquez, and Richard Whitson offered paintings to the courthouse on a loan basis for several months, and four colorful paintings now hang on the fourth floor of the courthouse.

Through the Arts & Culture Alliance, the judges also commissioned Knoxville-based Bobbie Crews to create a mural for the US District Courthouse.  The mural depicts a naturalization ceremony surrounded by the three buildings that, at one time, served as federal courthouses in Knoxville.  The mural will be finished in July.

Vigil – Multimedia Art Installation Opening July 1
Vigil, a new photo and video installation by Mignon and Wolf Naegeli and featuring sound art by Seva, honors the courage and dedication of the international peace network Women in Black.  Women in Black is a contemporary cross-cultural phenomenon consisting of more than 150 groups of women who are committed to peace with justice and actively opposed to injustice, war, militarism, and other forms of violence.  Vigil is on display at the Emporium Center for Arts & Culture, downtown Knoxville, from July 1-27.

The installation offers a compassionate look through the eyes and lenses of Swiss-born photo and video artist Mignon Naegeli.  For more than two years, Naegeli observed Christian, Muslim, and Jewish women, as well as women from other spiritual traditions and backgrounds as they held weekly vigils, rain or shine.  The video component of Vigil is simultaneously much more and much less than a documentary.  Vigil includes a ten-minute video, video stills, black & white portraits, and large digital compositions of color and black & white images and photographs.  Video stills from Vigil can be downloaded at: http://naegeli.net/Vigil/vigil_videostills.html.

An opening reception will be held July 1, 5-8pm.  Vigil is the first solo exhibition in the Emporium Center Gallery.

Picnic for the Performing Arts
The Alliance hosted Knoxville's first biennial Performing Arts Community Event by showcasing Knoxville’s lesser-known treasures – it’s colorful performing arts organizations – at the Picnic for the Performing Arts on June 2.  All members of the media were invited to visit the newly renovated Emporium Center for Arts & Culture, a hub of arts and cultural activities in downtown Knoxville, to celebrate Knoxville’s performing arts!  The Alliance's member organizations that are performing arts groups were available to share their upcoming seasons, give media the inside scoop on organizational news and performers, and more!  All attendees received hors d’oeuvres and a gift bag filled with goodies from participating organizations.
