Dogwood Arts Festival Hosts Five Exhibition Celebrations for April First Friday
(03/16/2010/Knoxville) – April is just around the corner, and the Dogwood Arts Festival is celebrating its 50th Anniversary Festival in true “blooming” fashion by hosting five exhibition openings as part of First Friday activities on April 2 from 5:00-9:00 PM. The exhibitions are displayed throughout downtown Knoxville and include "Re-Vision: Viewing Ordinary Objects in Extraordinary Ways" and the Student Art Show at the Emporium; "History in Prints" at the East Tennessee History Center; the Regional Fine Art Exhibition at the Rebori Building; and Art in Public Places in downtown Knoxville.
Dogwood Arts Festival partners with the Arts & Culture Alliance to present two exhibitions at the Emporium Center during the month of April. “Re-Vision: Viewing Ordinary Objects in Extraordinary Ways” features Gees Bend quilts and sculptural pieces whose unique designs have received more than fifteen national museum exhibitions, television interviews, and international acclaim. “Re-Vision” will be on display April 2-23 at the Emporium. The “Student Art Show” Exhibition & Competition features the creative work of Knoxville’s next generation of artists and will be on display April 2-30 in the Balcony at the Emporium. Awards for the Student Art Show will be presented at 7:00 PM on April 2 with music by “Heart-Strings” from 5:30-7:00 PM. The Emporium Center is located at 100 S. Gay Street, and gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, April 3, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Dogwood Arts Festival partners with the East Tennessee Historical Society to present “History in Prints”, an exhibition of all past Dogwood Arts Festival prints and featuring the new 50th Anniversary Commemorative Limited Edition Print by local artist Heather Whiteside. Whiteside will be available for signing prints from 5:00-8:00 PM on April 2 at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street. “History in Prints” will be on display April 2 – May 2, and gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Saturday, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and Sunday, 1:00-5:00 PM. Dogwood Arts Festival presents the Regional Fine Art Exhibition, a showcase of progressive emerging and professional artists from East Tennessee featuring a wide variety of media, at the Rebori Building, 128 S. Gay Street. The awards ceremony will take place at 8:00 PM on April 2. The Regional Fine Art Exhibition is on display April 2-30, and gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Sunday, April 11, 12:00-5:00 PM.
Dogwood Arts Festival presents “Art in Public Places”, a monumental installation of large-scale outdoor sculptures by regionally and nationally-acclaimed artists. The awards ceremony will take place at 5:30 PM on April 2 at the Krutch Park entrance on Gay Street. “Art in Public Places” is sponsored by the Knoxville News Sentinel and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
