American Museum of Science and Energy

The museum opened in 1949 in an old wartime cafeteria in Oak Ridge.  Originally named the American Museum of Atomic Energy, its guided tours took visitors through the peaceful uses of atomic energy.  The present facility, opened in 1975, continues to provide the general public with energy information.

Exhibits include:
The story of Oak Ridge, A panorama of historical photographs, documents, and artifacts explaining the Manhattan Project and the construction of Oak Ridge, TN.
Exploration Station, A popular area offering self-directed activities which explore light and color, sound, problem-solving, static electricity, robotics, vision, and more.
Energy: The American Experience, A historical display of labor saving devices.
Y-12 and National Defense, Featuring models of weapons, protective clothing, and tools along with video and hands-on activities that demonstrate processes, safety features, and careers at the Y-12 plant in Oak Ridge.
Earth’s Energy Resources, Using maps, tools, models, and audiovisual materials to explore the variety of energy sources found on Earth, such as coal, oil, geothermal, hydropower, and natural gas.
World of the Atom, An area highlighed by a cross section model of a nuclear reactor and a simulated underground nuclear waste storage area as well as pioneering atomic scientists, natural radiation, fusion, and nuclear energy in space.


Hours: The museum is open daily, except Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.  Mon-Sat 9-5; Sun 1-5.

Admission: $3 for adults; $2 for children age 6 to 17; $2 for seniors (65 and older).  Free for children age 5 and under.
AMSE is an ASTC Passport Program member and a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate Program member.
