Circle Modern DanceCircle Modern Dance was founded in the fall of 1990 to provide Knoxville audiences with an alternative to the current dance experiences available. The founders of Circle envisioned an atmosphere in which area choreographers and performance artists could display their artistic endeavors and recent works without being bound by the strictures of a "dance company." Circle operates under the philosophy that everyone is a dancer and everyone has the right to dance. Circle has performed for the Dogwood Arts Festival, the National Organization of Women, Kuumba Festival, Knoxville Symphony, Knoxville Opera, Knoxville College's Black History Celebration, Tennessee Stage Company, and numerous other social and arts organizations. In addition, Circle produces an annual winter concert Modern Dance, Primitive Light, a candlelit concert featuring live music, poetry, and new original dances. Circle also produces a Spring concert that showcases the works of local choreographers as well as guest artists. Now in its 15th year, Circle Modern Dance continues to attract wide-ranging audiences with daring choreography and a versatile cadre of dancers. Named "Best Local Dance Company" in Knoxville (1995, 2001, and 2002), they always provide their regularly sold-out audiences with an unforgettable evening of art and entertainment.
