MISSION
The Literacy Imperative is a social enterprise nonprofit venture whose mission is to provide tools of literacy to assist underserved communities in the understanding, evaluation, and use of information now and into the future.
VISION
To create a nationwide network of centers that delivers books, programs, and other tools of literacy to underserved communities through partnerships with local, regional, and national social enterprise ventures that generate revenue to support The Literacy Imperative mission.
BACKGROUND
The Literacy Imperative is a faith-based initiative of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Literacy Imperative is located in a 12,000 square foot facility at 201 Harriet Tubman Street. The facility features a book resource center with more than 20,000 books for all genres. It also houses onsite literacy programs for youth, adults, seniors, and businesses.
