Knoxville Opera: Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet
Performances are Friday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2:30 PM
French composer Charles Gounod gifted the world with a sensuous, thrilling opera about Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers. In 16th century Verona, two teenagers fall in love but are doomed by their feuding families and conspiring circumstances. This unique presentation of the opera includes dramatic readings from the original play in English. The opera is presented in French with projected English translations on a screen above the stage. The visually splendid production features two of America’s brightest young artists: soprano Yulan Piao (born in China) as Juliette Capulet and tenor Mackenzie Whitney as Romeo Montague.
