Suor Angelica is a unique one-act opera by Puccini containing moments of harrowing drama and unequalled redemptive beauty. The story takes place in a convent over one day or in MCO’s production the Courtyard of St. John’s Cathedral. The main character, Sister Angelica claims, during a discussion among the nuns, to have no desires, but she lies. She really desires to see her son whom she was separated from at his birth seven years ago. Angelica’s unforgiving aunt, the Princess, pays her a visit at the convent and is forced to tell Angelica her son has tragically died two years previously.  Angelica plunges into depression deciding she must see her son again and decides to take her own life, but taking her own life is a sin. Will she be redeemed and re-united with her son?  Find out in this dramatic outdoor interpretation directed by James Marvel.

This one-act opera is 50 minutes in length and will be performed outdoors, weather permitting. In the case of rain, performances will continue at St. John’s in an indoor location, TBA. This opera has one of the largest female casts in opera and contains humorous and light moments as well as dramatic ones. It will be performed in Italian with orchestra. Performances are May 30, May 31 & June 1 at 7:30 PM.
