University of Tennessee Opera Theatre presents two madcap comedies that catapulted their composers to success a century apart. In 1810, Rossini stepped in at the last minute to replace another composer and made his name with La cambiale di matrimonio (The Marriage Contract), an energetic farce filled with his signature bravura style and comedic flair. The story follows an English merchant determined to marry off his daughter to an American businessman, with hilarious results. One hundred years later in Milan, Menotti charmed audiences with Amelia al ballo (Amelia Goes to the Ball), a rib-tickling one-act in which Amelia battles her husband, her lover, and her own frustrations to make it to the first grand dance of the season. Both operas showcase their composers’ vivacious writing, dramatic storytelling, and sweeping romantic melodies, performed by two talented casts of University of Tennessee Opera Theatre students.
